UNFPA and Nilein University Celebrate World Population Day
Khartoum Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza, speaking at a ceremony held in the halls of the Faculty of Medicine at Nilein University on the occasion of World Population Day, stated that Sudan is an active country with significant engagement with the United Nations. He emphasized Sudan’s focus on population issues, which require special attention and emphasis, particularly in light of the changes brought about during the war. This necessitates increased efforts across all sectors.
For his part, Dr. Abubakr Koko Dahia, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Human Resources Development and Social Welfare, revealed that the unemployment rate in Sudan has reached 85% due to the war, which has affected all sectors of society, especially youth. He called for a strategic plan to empower young people in light of the global shift towards artificial intelligence and digital transformation. He urged the United Nations to provide genuine support for population-related activities, rather than merely holding celebrations. He also noted the Ministry’s focus on vocational training as a priority to reduce unemployment and poverty rates.
The Deputy Country Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ayana Qari, revealed the Fund’s support for population-related activities and the rebuilding of population-related institutions. She added that the Fund supports and collaborates with Sudan through the National Population Council, noting the challenges Sudanese people face in designing projects that are suitable for youth and support social development.
The Director of Nilein University, Professor Al-Hadi Adam Mohamed, spoke about the importance of population research and training qualified personnel to carry out this work. He affirmed that the university, with its various departments, laboratories, and facilities, is committed to supporting all activities aimed at liberating Sudan, promoting stability, and restoring normalcy.
For his part, the Chairman of the Strategic Planning Advisory Council of the Sudanese Youth Empowerment Authority, Maulana Ibrahim Berima, affirmed that this day is not merely a celebration, but rather a moment for reflection on our shared responsibility towards our present and future. He stated that youth are the renewable energy source, and societies are built upon them. He added, “We, the youth of Sudan, believe that investing in youth is the true investment.”
