Federal Health Minister Discusses Post-Liberation Health Preparedness with Central Darfur Governor
The Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, met today at his office with the Governor of Central Darfur State and leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement, Mustafa Tambour, to discuss the health situation in the state, its urgent needs, and preparations for the post-war and post-liberation phase. The meeting was attended by the Ministry’s Undersecretary, Dr. Ali Babiker, and the Director General of the Central Darfur State Ministry of Health, Dr. Mudathir Adam Ahmed.
The Minister stressed that the post-liberation period requires the immediate development of a comprehensive plan to rebuild the health sector through a phased implementation strategy. He called on the state authorities to begin an inventory of available health personnel without delay and pledged that the Federal Ministry would work to provide essential medical equipment, vehicles, and supplies. He affirmed that these requirements would receive priority support from both the Ministry and the country’s leadership, while additional needs would be presented to international partners and humanitarian organizations for assistance. He also emphasized the importance of designating a general hospital capable of providing major medical specialties along with selected sub-specialties.
Dr. Haitham reaffirmed that the Ministry bears direct responsibility for safeguarding the health of all Sudanese citizens, regardless of where they are located, in coordination with relevant authorities. He noted that health services had continued throughout the years of conflict, including through the support of humanitarian organizations, adding, “Health remains a bridge for peace.” He further stated that the Ministry provides assistance immediately after any area is liberated, expressing confidence that “Central Darfur will return stronger and better than before.”
For his part, the Ministry’s Undersecretary, Dr. Ali Babiker, urged that post-war recovery plans should draw lessons from the experiences of previously liberated states, including Khartoum, Al Jazirah, and Sennar. He stressed the importance of setting priorities according to the prevailing needs, noting that the Ministry would provide funding while also seeking support from the Presidency and international partners. He affirmed the Ministry’s full commitment to supporting the health sector.
Governor Mustafa Tambour underscored the need to prepare now for the post-war phase in light of the encouraging progress being made by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Joint Forces. He pointed out that hospitals across the state, including kidney dialysis centers, are currently out of service.
He praised the Federal Ministry of Health, led by the Minister and the Undersecretary, for maintaining support despite the challenges of war, in cooperation with humanitarian organizations, which helped ensure the continuity of health services.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Central Darfur State Ministry of Health, Dr. Mudathir Adam Ahmed, said the state’s health sector faces significant needs across all areas, particularly in preparation for the post-liberation period when displaced citizens are expected to return to their communities. He noted that qualified health personnel are available and that arrangements are underway for their return, expressing hope that these efforts will receive strong support from the Federal Ministry of Health.
