Al-Burhan Receives IGAD Executive Secretary
Head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met today at his office in Khartoum with a delegation from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), headed by the organization’s Executive Secretary, Workneh Gebeyehu, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem.
In a press statement, the IGAD Executive Secretary affirmed that his visit to Khartoum comes within the framework of consultations with the Sudanese leadership and the exchange of views and ideas on ways to achieve sustainable peace in Sudan. He expressed his deepest condolences to all those who have lost their lives in the war.
He stated that Sudan is a founding member of IGAD and one of its most important members, noting its historical significance as a bridge between the Arab and African worlds, as well as its humanitarian role, having provided refuge for millions of refugees from neighboring countries for decades.
He added that the delegation witnessed firsthand the extent of the destruction in the capital, Khartoum, and reiterated IGAD’s condemnation of all human rights violations committed in El Fasher and other war-affected areas.
The head of the delegation praised the exceptional resilience of the Sudanese people, stating that the delegation observed in Port Sudan a high level of patriotism and a strong determination to overcome the effects of the war and build a better future.
He emphasized that IGAD’s mission is to support the Sudanese people, not to impose any solutions on them, stressing that peace can only be achieved within Sudan and by the Sudanese themselves.
He added: “Sudanese intellectuals and political leaders are best positioned to shape their country’s future and achieve peace, while IGAD’s role is limited to facilitating and supporting every national effort that contributes to ending the war.”
The head of the delegation affirmed IGAD’s readiness to support all initiatives and efforts led by the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Sudanese government to achieve peace and stability, expressing appreciation for the Chairman’s commitment to the peace process.
He emphasized that the organization will continue to work closely with the Sudanese government to support efforts to establish a lasting and comprehensive peace in the country.
