Joint Technical Committee Meetings Between Sudan and Azerbaijan Begin
The Joint Technical Committee meetings between the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of Azerbaijan commenced today, Friday, May 1st, in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. These meetings aim to strengthen bilateral relations and advance cooperation, particularly in the economic, trade, and investment sectors, based on directives and understandings reached between the leadership of both countries.
The Sudanese delegation is headed by Mr. Magdi Mohamed Abdel Latif, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, with the participation of representatives from several ministries and economic institutions. The Azerbaijani side is headed by Mr. Nur Aliyev, Deputy Minister of Economy. The meetings discussed ways to develop technical and economic cooperation. The Sudanese side presented a portfolio of projects covering the energy, natural gas, petrochemical, thermal and hydroelectric power generation, and solar energy sectors, in addition to mining and road infrastructure.
The committee’s work began with a meeting between the Sudanese delegation and the Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister. The meeting addressed the trajectory of bilateral relations and ways to support and strengthen them across various fields, in light of the existing understandings between the leaderships of the two countries. Both sides affirmed their shared commitment to elevating and developing bilateral cooperation to serve common interests and contribute to enhancing stability and development in both nations. The Sudanese side also reviewed the evolving situation in the country, including the progress achieved by the armed forces on the ground and the government’s efforts to restore stability and advance the recovery process. They also discussed the peace initiative presented by Sudan to the UN Security Council as a national framework for addressing the crisis and creating the conditions for a comprehensive political process.
The visit included a field tour of the Alat Free Economic Zone in Baku, where the Sudanese delegation learned about the zone’s experience in developing infrastructure and logistics services, and the attractive investment environment it offers. The delegation expressed interest in leveraging this experience to support reconstruction efforts and stimulate economic growth in Sudan.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of continued coordination and consultation, and intensifying reciprocal visits, to strengthen the bilateral partnership and propel it towards broader horizons. These meetings come at a time when cooperation between the two countries is witnessing increasing momentum, with preparations underway to sign six new agreements in economic, investment and cultural fields, reflecting the growing trajectory of bilateral relations between Sudan and Azerbaijan. These agreements are expected to contribute to strengthening the legal and regulatory framework for cooperation, facilitating investment and trade, and supporting education, culture, and the exchange of expertise, thus opening broader horizons for future cooperation between the two countries.
