WFP Condemns Repeated Attacks on Humanitarian Convoys in Sudan

The World Food Programme (WFP) expressed its outrage and condemnation following “repeated attacks against humanitarian aid convoys in Sudan.”

In a statement issued yesterday (Friday) regarding Sudan, the WFP said it is “outraged by the recent attacks targeting its trucks, assets, and facilities in Sudan. Four incidents in the past ten days have resulted in the death or injury of humanitarian workers while delivering life-saving food assistance to the most vulnerable civilians.”

The WFP stressed that humanitarian workers and aid assets should never be targeted by any party.

The World Food Programme (WFP) clarified in its press release that the false reports circulating on social media, claiming that WFP trucks were carrying anything other than humanitarian aid, are “completely unfounded and put humanitarian workers and their life-saving work at serious risk.”

The WFP emphasized that its work is guided by the humanitarian principles of neutrality, impartiality, and independence from any political or military activity, adding, “Our focus is always on providing food assistance to the most vulnerable, regardless of age, gender, origin, or religious or political affiliation.”

The statement noted that Sudan continues to suffer the world’s largest hunger crisis, with more than 21 million people facing acute hunger, and that famine has been confirmed in El Fasher, North Darfur, and Kadugli, Kordofan.

The WFP indicated that it provides support to an average of four million people per month in Sudan through life-saving emergency food assistance, cash assistance, and food aid.
