Environmental Coordination and Maritime Boundary Demarcation: The Focus of a Meeting Between the Supreme Council for the Environment and the Border Commission

Professor Suleiman Al-Buni Suleiman, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for the Environment and Natural Resources, met this morning at his office in Port Sudan with Lieutenant General Engineer Al-Amin Mohamed Banaqa, Chairman of the National Border Commission, to discuss shared environmental issues. Lieutenant General Bashir Makki Al-Bahi, Secretary-General of the Commission, was also present.

During the meeting, Professor Al-Buni emphasized the Council’s coordinating role among government institutions and environmental stakeholders, recognizing them as partners in environmental work.

He revealed plans to hold an environmental conference bringing together relevant stakeholders and to establish a unified platform for related institutions and organizations. He also highlighted the Council’s crucial role in conducting environmental impact assessments for projects.

For his part, Lieutenant General Engineer Al-Amin Mohamed Banaqa explained that a committee comprised of representatives from various entities has been working on a baseline demarcation project and the establishment of a marine database since last year. He noted that the legal committee of the Supreme Council has been harmonizing the roles and responsibilities of institutions by reviewing existing laws and drafting new legislation, including laws pertaining to the Coast Guard, the Maritime Authority, and the marine environment.

Both sides affirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the public interest.
