Rubio lashes out at Sudan’s RSF, says US knows who is supporting them

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday lashed out at Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), calling for weapons supplies to be cut off to the group immediately.

“The fundamental problem that we have is that the RSF agrees to things and then never follows through with it,” Rubio said.

“Something needs to be done to cut off the weapons and the support that the RSF is getting,” he added.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a G7 meeting in Canada,

he accused the RSF of announcing an agreement on a humanitarian ceasefire, “but they don’t intend to comply with it.”

Rubio went on to suggest that the Trump administration would be open to designating the RSF as a foreign terror organization if it would help bring the war to an end.

Without naming any specific country, Rubio said the US would not allow the so-called Quad, which brought together the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE, “to be a shield that people hide behind and say, ‘Well, we’re involved with the Quad, we’re trying to solve it.’”

The UAE has been accused of continuing to funnel weapons and money into the RSF. They have denied these accusations.

“Someone’s giving them [RSF] the money,” he said. “We know who they are and we’re going to talk to them about it and make them understand that it’s going to reflect poorly on them.”
