Energy and Agriculture Ministries Agree to Accelerate Joint Cooperation to Advance Agriculture in Sudan

The Ministers of Energy and Agriculture discussed prospects for cooperation between their ministries to advance agriculture in Sudan and overcome obstacles related to electricity generation and joint hydroelectric and irrigation projects.

This came during a meeting between the Minister of Energy, Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed, and the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ismat Qurashi Abdullah, at his office yesterday.

The meeting addressed several projects requiring joint efforts to achieve full agricultural productivity, most notably increasing the operational capacity of the Mina power station in Sennar State, which supplies Rahad agricultural project, to ensure the success of the winter and summer seasons on 450 feddans, as well as other urgent joint projects.

The Minister of Energy affirmed that his ministry is a key partner of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation due to their shared work, particularly in hydroelectric generation and irrigation, and emphasized the ministry’s continued commitment to giving the agricultural sector the highest priority because of its direct link to food security.

For his part, the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation praised the efforts of the Ministry of Energy in the country’s reconstruction process, which bears the responsibility of providing electricity and fuel services to all areas in Sudan that were destroyed by the militia, noting that the power station needs 6 megawatt-hours to operate at its full capacity.
