Sudan’s Permanent Representative to Geneva: Militia War Has Obstructed Sudan’s Accession to the World Trade Organization

Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Hassan Hamid, reviewed the extent of the targeting and systematic sabotage carried out by the rebel militia against the country’s infrastructure and economy, including major production and manufacturing projects, ministries, institutions, and agencies related to the financial and banking systems.

Presenting Sudan’s statement to the 16th Ministerial Conference of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Thursday, the Permanent Representative said that, prior to the outbreak of the terrorist militia rebellion, Sudan had made significant progress in its accession arrangements to the World Trade Organization, but all these preparatory work and arrangements were temporarily disrupted.

In this context, he pointed to Sudan’s rich and diverse resources, rarely found in any other country, including minerals, especially gold, as well as oil, and vast and diverse agricultural resources. This bodes well for major investment opportunities, particularly in the agricultural and production sectors, at a time when the world is facing a food and water crisis.

He said that Sudan, in coordination with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, had made progress in preparing for the regional conference on gum arabic in Khartoum, had it not been for the militia rebellion, which temporarily suspended all these arrangements.
