The National Programme for Child Health at the Federal Ministry of Health held a regular meeting with the pediatrics and obstetrics departments to discuss reports and data regarding special care neonatal units.

The Acting Director of Maternal and Child Health, Amal Mahmoud, confirmed the great interest in nurseries, announcing the continuation of efforts to provide services in institutions that cater to women and childbirth. She directed the team to come up with recommendations that contribute to the development of care units for newborns, appreciating the role of partners in supporting and enhancing these efforts.

The Director of the National Program for Child Health, Dr. Qusay Mohamed Othman, revealed the National Strategy to Improve Services 2022-2030, which aims to reduce mortality among newborns to 12 deaths for every 1,000 live births, in addition to providing nurseries in 40% of the country’s localities by the end of 2025, and by 90% by the end of 2030, noting that there are 54 operating nurseries in Sudan, which represent 51% of the target, and 21% of the localities where nurseries are available and above them in the Northern State, then Kassala, River Nile, Sennar North Kordofan, Gedaref, The Red Sea, White Nile, West Darfur, Khartoum, Gezira and Blue Nile, while the states of East and Central Darfur are devoid of nurseries as well as South Kordofan, he added, adding that 40 nurseries are still needed in additional localities, praising the support from UNICEF.
