Security Council approves Guterres’ proposals on Sudan

The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, announced that the UN Security Council has approved a set of proposals submitted by Secretary-General António Guterres regarding the Sudanese crisis.

In press statements, Lamamra said that the proposals presented to the Council aim to support ceasefire efforts, strengthen the political process, and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to conflict-affected areas, especially in light of the worsening humanitarian situation in several western states.

This step comes within the framework of UN efforts to contain the Sudanese crisis, amid growing warnings of the risk of state disintegration and the spread of the conflict to neighboring countries, in addition to the deteriorating humanitarian and living conditions in conflict zones.

Guterres had previously stressed the need to cease hostilities, especially during religious occasions, calling for the opening of safe corridors for the delivery of humanitarian aid, and intensifying international efforts to support a political solution in Sudan.
