Women National Group calls for the formation of a Higher Council for Women, similar to the Youth Unit

The Women National Group called on the Prime Minister for the formation of a Higher Council for Women, similar to the recent establishment of a special unit for youth.

The group stressed that Sudanese women are among those most in need of support and empowerment, especially in light of the difficult conditions that the country is going through and the grave violations that have affected women in conflict zones and elsewhere.

The group pointed out that Sudanese women have often become the sole breadwinners of their families and bear double economic and social burdens, in light of the decline in institutional support and government sponsorship opportunities. The group also noted that women constitute the largest percentage of workers in the agriculture and civil service sectors, which reflects the size of their vital contribution to the national economy.

The group stressed the need to enhance the role and empowerment of women, and to ensure their fair participation in decision-making positions, as well as in the various state agencies and institutions, in order to ensure a real representation of women’s issues and visions in public policies.

The group concluded by calling on the Government to take practical steps towards establishing a permanent mechanism dealing with women’s issues and contributing to building a more just and equal society.
