International Call for Investigation into Attack on Aid Trucks in Darfur

The UN Representative in Sudan expressed her shock at the deadly attack on a humanitarian convoy in Al-Koma, North Darfur, on its way to El Fasher, a city besieged by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

She said in a press statement that the convoy, consisting of 15 trucks from the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF, was awaiting permission to proceed to El Fasher, the state capital, when it was targeted while carrying life-saving food, nutritional supplies, and other essential supplies for children and families facing famine.

She reported that five members of the convoy were killed, others were injured, and several trucks were burned, while vital humanitarian supplies were damaged or destroyed.

She said this was a deliberate attack on civilians risking their lives to help others. It is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. Humanitarian workers and operations are protected under international law. Attacking them is not only unlawful, it is also inhumane.

She added in a press release, “This atrocity comes at a time when nearly 25 million people in Sudan are facing severe hunger, including more than two million people facing famine or at risk – particularly in North Darfur. Yet efforts to reach them are met with violence, obstruction, and intimidation. This must end.”

I call for an immediate and independent investigation into this attack. Those responsible must be identified and held fully accountable. I reiterate my call to all those involved in the conflict in Sudan: Respect international humanitarian law. Protect civilians. Ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access. Let humanitarian workers do their work – without fear, without threats, and without violence.
