New International Quartet on Ending the War in Sudan

The US State Department announced, in an official statement issued by the Office of the Spokesperson, that Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Advisor for African Affairs Massad Boulos held a meeting in Washington, DC, with the ambassadors of the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Arab Republic of Egypt, as part of consultations on the developments in the situation in Sudan.

The statement confirmed that during the meeting, the United States expressed its deep concern about the repercussions of the armed conflict in Sudan, particularly in terms of the deteriorating humanitarian situation and the deepening regional crisis.

The US State Department considered that the continued fighting threatens the common interests of all countries in the region and undermines the stability required to achieve security and development.

The US side stressed, according to the statement, that a military solution to the ongoing conflict is unattainable, calling for intensified political and diplomatic efforts aimed at convincing the warring parties of the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and engaging in a comprehensive negotiation process leading to a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

The US State Department also highlighted the importance of coordination among countries with a direct influence on the course of the crisis, pointing to the pivotal role that the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt can play in pushing toward a de-escalation of the conflict and strengthening the negotiating process, in a way that serves the interests of the Sudanese people and restores stability to the region as a whole.
