Abdul-Rahim Hussein denies involvement in 1989 coup

The 22nd. defendant in the court of plotters of June 1989 coup, General Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein, has strongly denied any connection to the coup.

This came in the session of the court of plotters of June 1989 coup, which was held today at the Institute of Judicial and Legal Sciences here, chaired by Hon. Imad-Eddin Al-Jak Fadl, the Judge of the Supreme Court, where the defendant made his testimony.

Hussein said in his testimony that he had heard of the coup on the morning of the second day, when information reported that the Armed Forces had seized power in the country.

Concerning the military personnel who are before the court, the defendant, Hussein, said that he had not met them before the coup, except for the defendant, Bakri Hassan Salih, who had been with him during the study stages. Regarding his presence on the night of the coup, the defendant said that he had been at his home at the barracks of the Air Force in the military zone in Wadi Sayedna, and that he was at that time at the rank of colonel, while the commander of the area was the infantry commander with the rank of major general.

The court will continue its sessions next Tuesday to hear the statements of the remaining defendants.
