Senior UN official to visit Sudan in mid-January

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, will visit Sudan from January 14 to 18, 2026, where he will meet with authorities, representatives of the international community, and internally displaced persons.

Turk will hold meetings in Port Sudan with government officials, civil society representatives, and the UN team.

He will also visit the Northern State, including the Al-Afad shelter center, where he will meet with displaced people from Darfur and Kordofan, as well as humanitarian partners.

The High Commissioner is scheduled to hold two press conferences at the conclusion of his visit on Sunday, January 18, one in Port Sudan and the other in Nairobi, Kenya. His last official visit to Sudan was in November 2022.

In a previous statement, Turk called for an impartial and thorough investigation into the attack on the Zamzam camp for internally displaced persons in Darfur, stressing the need to hold those responsible for the serious violations accountable. He also expressed concern about the escalating hostilities in the Kordofan region.
