Delegation of Sudan Stresses the Importance of Strengthening International Cooperation Based on Justice and Equality

The delegation of Sudan, headed by Maulana Huwaida Ali Awad Al-Karim, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, in its statement to the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development, praised the efforts made by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and welcomed its annual report. It stressed the importance of strengthening international cooperation based on justice and equality in order to enable developing countries, including Sudan, to advance their development priorities.

The delegation of Sudan also noted in its statement that its country has attached great importance to the right to development by embodying the general principles of human rights and has developed appropriate national policies aimed at the continuous improvement of this right. The state approved the social protection strategy in January 2023.

The statement noted that the rebel Rapid Support Militia (RSF) has played a pivotal role in exacerbating the humanitarian crisis through gender-based violence, child recruitment, looting and vandalism, disrupting basic services, and increasing the suffering of the population, especially women and children.

The statement also stressed that the report’s assertion that armed conflicts undermine the right to development is fully applicable to the reality of Sudan today and called on the international community to strengthen development cooperation by financing reconstruction and debt relief, supporting climate justice through green finance, and involving women and youth in development plans.
