Egypt Renews Support for the Government of Sudan
The Prime Ministers of Sudan and Egypt held an official meeting on Thursday, at the start of Dr. Kamel Idris’s visit to Cairo. The discussions addressed frameworks and projects for cooperation between the two brotherly countries in the coming period.
Ministers from both sides also held bilateral meetings to discuss proposals and detailed programs for cooperation between their counterpart ministries.
According to the joint statement issued at the conclusion of the talks, the Egyptian side reiterated its full support for the Government of Sudan and all efforts aimed at preserving its national institutions, rejecting any threat to Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, and supporting the aspirations of the Sudanese people for progress and prosperity and achieving their goals of reconstruction and development.
The Sudanese side reiterated its appreciation for the ties and commonalities that unite the two brotherly peoples, and expressed the Sudanese state’s aspiration and readiness, with its various national institutions, to work together to serve the goals of strengthening this relationship and expanding it to broader horizons.
During the bilateral discussions, the two sides emphasized the importance of considering convening joint committees, with the relevant authorities in both countries determining appropriate timing for this matter. The two sides also discussed developing cooperation in the field of investment and the opportunities available to Egyptian companies to invest in a number of areas of strategic importance to Sudan, particularly as it anticipates the reconstruction phase.
The two sides praised the significant development witnessed in sectoral cooperation and coordination between the two countries, particularly in the transportation sector. They also commended the steps taken regarding railway and electrical interconnection projects between the two countries, which will open broader horizons for economic and trade cooperation between them.
The discussions also touched on cooperation in the health sector between the two countries. They agreed to support and enhance cooperation in higher education, scientific and technical research, and to launch specialized training programs for professional and technical qualifications for the Sudanese side in cooperation with relevant Egyptian agencies. They also agreed to revitalize cooperation frameworks in the fields of human development and administrative development.
The two sides also discussed regional security issues and ways to enhance and sustain them. They emphasized the need for sustained coordination and consultation on various issues related to regional security, particularly in the Red Sea region.
The two sides reiterated their rejection of Ethiopia’s unilateral approach to the Blue Nile, which is inconsistent with the relevant principles of international law and the spirit of cooperation that should prevail in connection with the use of the Nile River, the lifeline for all basin countries. They also affirmed their joint coordination through the Permanent Joint Technical Commission for Nile Waters, the body entrusted with studying and formulating a unified opinion between the two countries.
