Sudan calls on the international community to support its reconstruction efforts

Vienna – Sudan renewed its call on the international community to support its national efforts to rebuild institutions related to the peaceful uses of atomic energy, which witnessed massive, systematic, and widespread destruction by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebels. Sudan also called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to send a technical mission to assess the damage and determine urgent needs and how to respond.

This came in a statement delivered by Ambassador Magdi Ahmed Mufaddal, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organizations in Vienna, before the IAEA Board of Governors meetings, which began today, Monday, June 9, 2025, and will continue until June 13.

In the same context, the statement addressed the massive destruction of vital institutions that the IAEA helped establish, such as the Atomic Energy Hospital, the National Cancer Center at the University of Gezira, scientific research centers, the National Public Health Laboratory (StackLaboratory), the Sudan Atomic Energy Authority, and the National Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority. It also listed the significant repercussions of this destruction on the humanitarian, health, and economic conditions in the country.
