By: Alaa Babiker

In the past article we mentioned few benefits of sports to our health. In this continuation, we will mention why sport and exercising are very important to our health.

Teamwork and Cooperation: Team sports, in particular, emphasize the importance of working together towards a common goal. This encourages cooperation, empathy, and the ability to understand diverse perspectives. These skills are not only valuable in sports but also in personal and professional relationships.

Enhances Cognitive Function: Engaging in sports also has positive effects on cognitive function. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which enhances brain function and improves concentration, memory, and learning. Sports that require strategic thinking and quick decision-making further stimulate cognitive abilities.

Brain Health: Regular physical activity is associated with the growth of new brain cells and improved brain elasticity. It helps protect against cognitive decline and reduces the risk of mental health disorders such as depression and dementia.

Alleviates Symptoms of Depression: Exercise is a powerful tool in combating depression. It promotes neural growth, reduces inflammation, and releases endorphins, which help alleviate symptoms of depression. Engaging in sports provides a structured and positive outlet for individuals struggling with depressive symptoms.

Positive Routine: Having a regular sports schedule can provide structure and routine, which are beneficial for individuals with depression. It offers a sense of purpose and something to look forward to, breaking the cycle of negative thoughts and behaviors.

The impact of sports on mental health is profound and multi-layered. From reducing stress and anxiety to improving self-esteem, social skills, cognitive function, and alleviating depression, the benefits are extensive. Playing sports matters not only for physical health but also for fostering a healthy mind. Encouraging participation in sports can lead to a happier, healthier, and more resilient population. So, let’s all participate in one or two types of sports and not forget to pray that our beloved country is soon safe and secure.
