Sudan’s Nutrition Movement Steering Committee Advances Multi-Sector Plan to Improve Nutritional Status

The Steering Committee of the Sudan Scaling Up Nutrition Movement held a meeting today at the main hall of the Federal Ministry of Health in Khartoum, chaired by the Ministry’s Undersecretary, Dr. Ali Babiker, and attended by several ministry undersecretaries and their representatives.

Dr. Ali Babiker stressed the importance of collective action to improve the country’s nutritional status and achieve a healthier Sudan. He noted that malnutrition has worsened significantly due to the war, emphasizing the need for regular committee meetings and the development of a detailed annual plan for the first phase of implementing the National Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Plan (2026–2035). The plan will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for final approval.

The Undersecretary also announced the expansion of the committee to include additional stakeholders involved in nutrition, expressing appreciation to the Government of Sudan and the Ministry of Finance for their continued support of the health sector.

Representatives of the participating ministries, the Social Security and Poverty Reduction Commission, and the National Investment Authority reaffirmed their commitment to working with the Ministry of Health to improve nutrition indicators. They pledged to implement the responsibilities assigned to their respective institutions and translate the ten-year nutrition strategy into action following its official launch across ministries next August.

Participants underscored the importance of strengthening coordination among relevant ministries, establishing an updated national database—particularly in light of the impact of the war—promoting nutrition awareness, integrating nutrition into the social responsibility programs of investment projects, attracting both national and foreign investment, learning from successful international experiences in poverty reduction, improving supply chains, and supporting transportation projects to enhance food and nutrition security.
