High-Level Meeting Advances Sudan’s Food Fortification Strategy

Khartoum/

Sudan’s Federal Ministry of Health convened a high-level consultative meeting with government institutions and development partners to strengthen food fortification with essential micronutrients, aiming to reduce nutrition-related diseases, particularly among children and pregnant women in the aftermath of the war.

Minister of Health Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim called for a mandatory national policy requiring the fortification of salt with iodine, wheat flour with iron, and edible oil with vitamin A. He stressed that compliance with these standards should become a prerequisite for licensing food production facilities.

Participants emphasized the need to update technical regulations, strengthen quality control systems, support local food industries, and establish a technical committee to advance the national food fortification strategy and improve nutritional outcomes across Sudan.
