Tripartite Agreement Worth $51 Million to Implement Water Projects in the Red Sea State

The Ministry of Finance and the Red Sea State government signed a tripartite agreement today with the African Development Bank and UNICEF (as a third party) to implement all water projects in the state at a total cost of $51 million.

The agreement was signed in the presence of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, and representatives from the African Development Bank, UNICEF, and the state government.

In a press statement, the Minister of Finance assured the people of the Red Sea State, and Port Sudan in particular, that the drinking water problems would be resolved, fulfilling a promise he had made to them. He emphasized that the agreement covers all water projects in the state and also promised to address the electricity problems, work on which has already begun to extend service to all areas.

For his part, the Governor of Red Sea State, Lieutenant General Mustafa Mohamed Nour, explained that the agreement comes within the framework of improving water supplies. He noted that it is a grant from the African Development Bank, implemented by UNICEF, and includes internal water networks, transmission lines, a 10,000 cubic meter water treatment plant, and sanitation projects.

The Governor praised UNICEF’s previous interventions, including water projects in South Tokar last year at a cost of $1.5 million, in addition to its efforts in the health and education sectors. He expressed his gratitude to the African Development Bank and the Ministry of Finance, and affirmed that the state’s citizens will witness a tangible improvement in water supplies in the coming period.
