Sudan Addresses IAEA Board of Governors Meeting, Calls for Technical Delegation to Visit the Country

Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, Austria, Ambassador Magdi Mufaddal, addressed the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held from June 8-12, on Tuesday.

Ambassador Mufaddal called on the Agency and member states to support Sudan’s efforts to restore cancer diagnosis and treatment services at government centers affected by the war, including the National Cancer Center in Wad Madani, the Khartoum Atomic Energy Hospital, and Shandi University, as well as to contribute to the establishment of three new centers in remote areas.

Mufaddal commended the progress made in the project to restore radiotherapy services at the National Cancer Center in Wad Madani, noting the completion of its first phase, and the ongoing efforts to procure radiotherapy diagnostic and treatment equipment and provide a linear accelerator for the center.

He also called on member states and regional and international financing institutions to support the “Maize for Food” initiative launched by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He emphasized Sudan’s eagerness to receive a technical delegation from the IAEA to assess the situation of the Atomic Energy Commission and related national institutions, identify their urgent needs, and develop a plan for their rehabilitation and capacity building in the areas of agriculture, livestock, fisheries, water resources, and food safety.
