Sudan’s Ambassador to Germany Calls for International Support to Protect Sudanese Cultural Heritage

Sudan’s Ambassador to Germany, Ilham Ibrahim Mohamed Ahmed, called for international support to protect Sudanese antiquities and cultural heritage during her address at the “Sudan Day 2026” event. The event, organized by Humboldt University of Berlin in collaboration with the Sudanese Archaeological Society, the Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection, Berlin University of Applied Sciences, and the German Archaeological Institute, was held under the theme: “Protecting Sudanese Archaeological Heritage: Experiences, Realities, and Prospects.”

The Ambassador emphasized the importance of academic and cultural cooperation between Sudan and Germany, praising research partnerships that have contributed to supporting archaeological studies and preserving Sudanese heritage. She outlined the significant challenges facing Sudanese archaeological sites, museums, and cultural institutions as a result of war and environmental and climatic risks. She called on the international community, universities, and research centers to support efforts in documentation, digital preservation, museum rehabilitation, and capacity building.

She also emphasized the importance of continued scientific and research cooperation with German and international academic institutions, expressing her hope that the event’s discussions would lead to practical initiatives and partnerships that support the protection and restoration of Sudanese cultural heritage.

The event featured specialized discussions on the challenges facing Sudanese heritage and ways to enhance scientific and institutional cooperation for its preservation, with the participation of representatives from Sudanese and German academic and cultural institutions.
