Our Exports at the Mercy of Global Environmental Shifts

The world no longer views environmental protection merely as a voluntary commitment or moral responsibility, but rather as a fundamental prerequisite for accessing international markets.

Traditional quality standards, such as pest-free environment, moisture levels, and competitive pricing, are no longer sufficient to guarantee product entry into global markets.

Today, the world is asking a new question: Where did this product come from? Was it produced at the expense of forests and the environment? Environmental issues have become an integral part of international trade regulations.

In this context, the European Union Regulation on the Prevention of Deforestation (EUDR) stands out. It requires importers to prove that several key commodities, such as coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soybeans, and timber, were not produced on land that has been deforested since June 2023. Thus, health certificates or technical specifications alone are no longer sufficient; products now require what can be termed an “environmental certificate of origin” to demonstrate the sustainability of their production.

In this context, Sudan has an exceptional opportunity. Gum arabic, one of the country’s most important exports, is not a product linked to deforestation. Rather, it is the fruit of acacia and gum arabic trees, which contribute to environmental protection, combating desertification, improving soil fertility, and ensuring the sustainability of agricultural production.

Therefore, the real challenge lies not in the nature of the product itself, but in the ability to demonstrate this fact to the world through modern documentation and tracking systems.

This highlights the importance of geographic information systems (GIS) and digital tracking to prove the sustainability of production areas and ensure the transparency of the supply chain, thus protecting Sudanese gum arabic and enhancing its value in global markets.

Sudan also possesses an additional advantage: its traditional agroforestry system, which combines trees and crops in a single production system.

This system has been practiced in Sudan for hundreds of years, cultivating acacia trees alongside agricultural crops.

This model not only preserves tree cover but also enhances agricultural production, stores carbon, and contributes to climate change adaptation, making it a global model for sustainability that can be transformed into a genuine competitive advantage in international markets.

For Sudan to capitalize on this opportunity, it must align its national legislation with global environmental requirements, develop tracking and documentation systems, and protect the identity of its products by registering them as recognized geographical indications.

Compliance with new environmental standards is not a burden on Sudanese exports, but rather an opportunity to maximize the value of its products. Gum arabic is not merely a commodity, but an environmental service that contributes to climate protection and combating desertification, and deserves a higher return.
