Interior Minister Announces Comprehensive Plan to Strengthen Sudan’s Anti-Drug Efforts

Sudan’s Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General of Police Babiker Samra, has affirmed that the country is facing growing challenges in combating narcotics and requires coordinated governmental and community efforts to address the threat posed by drug abuse and trafficking.
Speaking at the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking celebration, organized by the General Directorate for Drug Control in coordination with the National Committee for Drug Control, the minister praised the achievements of the Sudanese Armed Forces and emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining security and stability across the country.
He revealed that authorities recently dismantled a large drug manufacturing facility in Al-Jaili and seized significant quantities of narcotics, describing the operation as a major achievement in the fight against drug trafficking. He noted that Sudan is now facing challenges related to both drug production and consumption, underscoring the need for greater resources and capabilities to confront the problem.
The minister further announced plans to restructure the National Committee for Drug Control to enhance its role in public awareness and community engagement. He stressed that the government is committed to supporting the General Directorate for Drug Control through adequate funding and comprehensive strategic planning.
Meanwhile, Khartoum State Governor Ahmed Othman Hamza called for unified efforts among government institutions and civil society organizations, emphasizing that official measures alone are insufficient to effectively combat drug-related crimes.
He highlighted the family as the first line of defense against drug abuse and stressed the complementary roles of various institutions.
These include the Ministry of Health in treatment and rehabilitation services, religious affairs authorities in promoting awareness and moral values, the Ministry of Youth and Sports in providing constructive activities for young people, and the Ministry of Education in protecting students from the dangers of drugs within schools.
The governor also pointed to the need to address social issues linked to drug trafficking and abuse, including the exploitation of some beggars in drug-related activities.
He reaffirmed Khartoum State’s readiness to cooperate with all stakeholders to strengthen prevention efforts and expand public awareness campaigns against narcotics.
