Federal Minister of Health Launches Mobile Primary Healthcare Units and Medical Waste Transport Vehicles in Port Sudan

The Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, today inaugurated the handover of nine mobile primary healthcare units and two trucks designated for the transportation of medical waste at the headquarters of the National Medical Supplies Fund in Port Sudan.

The event was attended by Ms. Sarayo Bzurkova, Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Mr. Richard Data, Country Director of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and Dr. Aman Al-Awad, Country Director of MedGlobal.

The initiative comes within the framework of cooperation between the Federal Ministry of Health and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Global Fund through the COVID-19 Response Mechanism (C19RM) grant.

The launch aims to strengthen Sudan’s healthcare system and expand access to primary healthcare services across different regions, contributing to improved quality of medical services and ensuring an effective response to current health challenges.

Speaking to the press after the ceremony, the Federal Minister of Health stated that the delivery of the medical waste transport vehicles builds on a previous Global Fund-supported project that included the establishment of oxygen plants and medical waste treatment facilities in Dongola and Gedaref. He added that the mobile primary healthcare units are intended to serve displaced populations and remote areas under the supervision of the Primary Healthcare Directorate, as part of broader efforts to rebuild the health system.

The Minister also revealed that a proposal worth USD 139 million has been submitted to support programs combating malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis. He emphasized that this initiative will strengthen Sudan’s efforts to address epidemic diseases and improve the health and well-being of its citizens.
