Egypt Informs the US of its Views on Sudanese Political Dialogue
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that a telephone call took place yesterday, Monday, June 8, between Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, and Mr. Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs. The two sides exchanged views on a number of regional issues of common interest.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the call addressed the situation in Sudan. Minister Abdel-Aty stressed the necessity of preserving Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, supporting its national institutions, and rejecting the establishment of any parallel entities. He also emphasized the importance of launching a purely Sudanese-owned political process to end the conflict.
He further emphasized the importance of reaching a humanitarian truce as a preliminary step towards a sustainable ceasefire, allowing for the delivery of humanitarian aid and alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people.
The call also addressed developments in Libya. The Foreign Minister affirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for the unity and stability of Libya, emphasizing the importance of unifying national institutions and reaching a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-Libyan process, paving the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
Regarding developments in the Horn of Africa, Minister Abdel-Aty stressed Egypt’s steadfast position on maintaining the security and stability of the Horn of Africa region, considering it a direct extension of Egyptian national security. He emphasized the importance of supporting national institutions, preserving the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of states, and rejecting any policies that would infringe upon state sovereignty or undermine the foundations of stability in the region. The issue of water was also discussed as an existential matter for Egypt, along with the paramount importance of respecting the rules of international law and refraining from any unilateral actions.
