Sudan Calls for African Solutions at Human Rights Meeting in Banjul

During its participation in the 87th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, held in the Gambian capital, Banjul, the Sudanese delegation—comprising Legal Advisor General Yasser Sayed Ahmed Al-Hassan, Rapporteur of the National Human Rights Mechanism, and Ambassador Al-Zein Ibrahim Hussein, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the African Union—met with Idrissa Sow, Chairperson of the Commission.

The delegation presented an overview of the institutional and legal frameworks through which the Government of Sudan works to protect and promote human rights, including the National Human Rights Mechanism chaired by the Minister of Justice.

This mechanism encompasses all relevant departments and bodies concerned with human rights, including the protection of women, children, and persons with disabilities, as well as judicial and law enforcement institutions. It also includes the independent National Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, which continues to receive state support despite current challenges, with the aim of enhancing its capacity to address human rights issues—especially in light of serious violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces militia.

The delegation also highlighted Sudan’s significant contributions to joint African action through the Commission and other platforms. It reiterated its reservation regarding any joint investigation involving the African Union and non-African entities, and called for strengthening African solidarity and cooperation.

Furthermore, the delegation urged the Chairperson of the Commission to confront negative external roles that support the war in Sudan, which have contributed to the deterioration of human rights, and emphasized the importance of finding purely African solutions that are acceptable and effective.

For his part, Idrissa Sow welcomed the views and observations presented by the Sudanese delegation, affirming that they would receive due attention from the Commission. He emphasized his commitment to integrity, solidarity, and consultative solutions, and reiterated the Commission’s readiness to support these goals and stand with Sudan and its people in pursuit of stability.
