Ministry of Energy: Comprehensive Plan to Rehabilitate the Electricity Sector and Gradually Stabilize Supply
The Ministry of Energy affirms that the electricity sector is experiencing extremely complex and exceptional operational circumstances due to the extensive damage inflicted on the infrastructure of power generation, transmission, and distribution stations as a result of the war and the systematic targeting of a number of vital and strategic facilities in the country.
The Ministry explains that the challenges citizens are facing regarding electricity supply are directly related to the extent of the damage to the national grid, which has led to an unprecedented decline in the contribution of thermal power generation, while relying primarily on hydroelectric power generation. This comes amidst increased demand during the summer months and the resulting strain on the grid and power plants.
In this context, the Ministry, through its various electricity companies and technical and engineering teams, is working continuously to implement a comprehensive rehabilitation and operational plan based on urgent priorities aimed at stabilizing the electricity supply and ensuring essential services for citizens.
Ongoing efforts include rehabilitating several transmission and distribution lines, substations, and control centers, as well as expediting maintenance work at thermal power plants, particularly the Umm Dabakir and Qurei power complexes, and securing the necessary fuel and supply lines to ensure stable operation.
As part of urgent measures to improve electricity supply, the Ministry is working to bring units at both Qurei 1 and Qurei 4 power stations online in the coming phase, in conjunction with increasing hydroelectric generation capacity. This will contribute to strengthening the stability of the national grid and gradually reducing power outages.
The Ministry is also continuing its efforts to import and manufacture power transformers, distribution transformers, and the necessary technical equipment, despite challenges related to global supply chains and rising procurement costs. Furthermore, arrangements are being made to address the meter shortage through local manufacturing and direct imports. The Ministry emphasizes that its current priority is ensuring electricity supply to vital facilities essential to citizens’ lives, including water treatment plants, hospitals, and service and educational institutions, in addition to implementing solar energy projects in several key locations.
As part of its future plans, the Ministry is proceeding with the implementation of renewable energy projects and expanding regional electricity interconnection, in addition to strengthening cooperation with friendly countries and companies in the areas of rehabilitation and development of the electricity sector.
The Ministry of Energy calls on citizens to rationalize their electricity consumption, preserve the national grid, and cooperate in reducing illegal connections that negatively affect the stability of the supply.
The Ministry reiterates its full commitment to continuing work to rebuild what the war destroyed and to gradually stabilize the service, despite the significant challenges facing the sector during this exceptional period.
