UN Opens Headquarters in Khartoum, Resumes Humanitarian Operations

The United Nations inaugurated its official headquarters (United Nations House) and the office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Khartoum, the capital, in a strategic step aimed at resuming international operations as life returns to normal in the city. The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem, along with leaders from the international organization and officials from the Khartoum State government. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs considered this step a historic day that embodies the close partnership for the stability of the country.

In his speech during the ceremony, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem affirmed the government’s commitment to working jointly with UN agencies to implement the “Government of Hope for Peace” initiative, leading to sustainable stability. He stressed that the Darfur and Kordofan regions will soon be liberated from the grip of the rebel militia. The Minister also delivered a strong message to the international community, stating that Sudan welcomes all peace initiatives but rejects external dictates, asserting that there is no future for the militia in the country’s political landscape.

On the diplomatic front, the Foreign Minister called on young people to take the lead in building the post-war phase, while simultaneously urging the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to rectify their political stances and review their decision to suspend Sudan’s membership. Salem concluded by praising the humanitarian efforts on the ground led by UN Coordinator Denise Brown, and commending the diplomatic position of the Republic of Zimbabwe, whose ambassador maintained his presence in Khartoum throughout the crisis.
