Sudan’s Embassy in Tokyo Launches Efforts to Mobilize Humanitarian and Development Aid for Sudan
The Sudanese Embassy in Japan has begun mobilizing humanitarian and development aid for Sudan in coordination with the regional offices of international aid organizations in Tokyo, most notably the World Food Programme (WFP).
The Sudanese Ambassador to Japan, Al-Rayah Haidoub, held a meeting on
Wednesday with the WFP Country Director, Mr. Yasuhiro Tsumura, at his office in Yokohama. The meeting aimed to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and coordination with the embassy in expanding the WFP’s development and humanitarian programs in Sudan. This comes in light of the recent shift by the Japanese government to channel its humanitarian and development aid through United Nations agencies due to the security situation.
Ambassador Haidoub expressed the Sudanese government’s appreciation for the World Food Programme’s humanitarian and development assistance efforts, its work in alleviating poverty and hunger in several regions, and its implementation of numerous infrastructure, agricultural, and service projects.
The Ambassador affirmed the mission’s readiness in Tokyo to cooperate and expand this partnership, working to address the challenges facing the Programme’s operations in coordination with relevant Sudanese government entities. He also emphasized the importance of coordinating and communicating with the Japanese government, as a donor country, to secure and increase its support for projects in Sudan through the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
For his part, Mr. Yasuhiro Tsumura affirmed the World Food Programme’s commitment to continuing its efforts to support those affected by the war in Sudan, redoubling its efforts in this regard, and mobilizing and increasing Japanese government support for development and humanitarian projects in Sudan.
The World Food Programme’s Country Director, in turn, agreed to Ambassador Haidoub’s proposal for joint action in organizing an event and seminar to mobilize Japanese support for humanitarian and development aid projects in Sudan. It was agreed to work together to develop a plan and framework for holding this seminar in the last quarter of this year and to invite the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to be a key partner in organizing it. It was also agreed to invite a number of Japanese parliamentarians and academics to participate, in addition to the Director of the World Food Programme office in Khartoum, a representative from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, and a representative from the Humanitarian Aid Commission.
