Official Warning from Kamil Idris to the Germans

Sudanese Prime Minister Dr.h Kamil Idris issued a strongly worded warning to the international community and the organizers of the Berlin Conference on Sudan, scheduled for April 15th. He emphasized that excluding the Sudanese government from official participation would render the conference’s outcomes “non-binding” and lead international efforts toward “complete failure.”

A Message to Berlin

In a press briefing held in Khartoum, Idris explained that he had clearly conveyed this position to German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul during their meeting at the Munich Security Conference last February. He pointed out that attempting to bypass the current government disregards the political reality, stressing that “making decisions concerning Sudan without its official representatives is unacceptable and will not achieve the desired stability.”

Lessons from the Past

The Prime Minister cautioned against repeating the experiences of previous conferences, such as those in Paris and London, which failed to achieve tangible results on the ground due to the lack of direct coordination with the executive authority in Khartoum. He added that the German side and the international community still have time to correct course and engage the government to present a practical vision for a sustainable political process and to deliver humanitarian aid efficiently.

These statements come just days before the start of the conference in the German capital, amid international anticipation regarding how major powers will address the Sudanese issue, which is entering its fourth year of complex crisis.
