Gezira Scheme Governor: We Plan to Cultivate 600,000 Feddans of Wheat Next Year

Prime Minister Kamil Idris witnessed the launch of the wheat harvest in the Gezira Scheme on Monday. He observed the high productivity achieved by farmer Abdullah Yusuf in the “Wad al-Turabi” section, which reached 26 sacks per feddan.

The Prime Minister praised the efforts of the project’s workers and farmers, describing them as the “backbone of the Gezira Scheme.” He added, “The Gezira Scheme is the largest in the world under unified management,” emphasizing that this high productivity bodes well for Sudan’s self-sufficiency in this strategic commodity.

He also reiterated the “Government of Hope’s” commitment to overcoming all obstacles facing the project to restore it to its position among the world’s leading projects.

For his part, the Governor of Gezira State, Al-Tahir Ibrahim Al-Khair, explained that the continuous monitoring and directives of the Prime Minister have positively impacted the project’s performance, emphasizing the government’s determination to eliminate wheat imports by relying entirely on local production.

In the same vein, the Governor of the Gezira Scheme, Engineer Ibrahim Mustafa, welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit, commending the Armed Forces and their supporting forces, as well as the martyrs of the “Battle of Dignity,” for their role in creating the conditions that led to this abundant harvest.

He also expressed his gratitude to the contributing organizations and companies, most notably the World Food Programme, the Relief Services Programme, and Harveys.

The Governor revealed that 213,000 feddans were cultivated this year, announcing a plan to more than double this to exceed 600,000 feddans next year, in addition to preparing to cultivate 500,000 feddans during the summer season.
