Governor of the Gezira Scheme، Engineer Ibrahim Mustafa, announced that this season’s wheat crop promises a high yield, reaching up to 15 sacks (100 kg each) per feddan.

The Governor confirmed that harvesting operations are proceeding according to plan through specialized committees and a comprehensive security plan, anticipating completion of the harvest by April 20th.

This means that the total expected wheat production from the Gezira Scheme alone will be around 305,000 tons.

This is a considerable amount if we take into account the circumstances Sudan is currently facing.

Given the risks and threats facing transport and supply chains, which will inevitably affect fertilizer and fuel supplies, this could impact the stability of grain prices, including wheat. This could put pressure on countries that rely on wheat imports, not to mention other commodities such as vegetables, meat, and their inputs like medicines and animal feed.

It is advisable for the government to establish a Think Tank Group (a repository of experts) to oversee the development and implementation of a contingency plan that improves the connection between the three pillars of the production process (farmers, the knowledge sector, and finance), so that Sudan, despite all its challenges, can become a true breadbasket for some Arab countries.

The capabilities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia could be utilized for financing and as a means of securing fuel and fertilizer.

If the current situation in the world continues, the price of a ton of wheat may reach over $500, and you may not find it even if you pay.

We believe that Sudan is qualified to become the Arab Food Basket if all efforts are exerted to make any agricultural season a success.
