High-Level African Union Delegation to Visit Khartoum Soon

A high-level technical delegation from the African Union Commission is scheduled to visit Sudan in the coming days to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the African Union office in Sudan, as well as hold important meetings with a number of state officials.

According to a high-ranking diplomatic source, the African Union has proposed April 5th as the date for a visit by a delegation headed by Mohamed Belaiche, the Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Director of the African Union Coordination Office in Khartoum. The delegation will include a number of officials from various departments within the African Union.

The African Union closed its office in Khartoum following the change of government on October 25, 2021, which led the AU to suspend Sudan’s membership, deeming the change unconstitutional.

Sudan considers the African Union’s move biased and an arbitrary interpretation of the AU’s principles, arguing that the change involved the dissolution of a partnership between two transitional parties, not an elected authority.
