SSMO Affirms Continued Cooperation with Supply and Consumer Protection Investigations

The Director General of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO), Rahba Saeed, accompanied by a delegation from the organization, visited the Supply and Consumer Protection Investigations Department in Khartoum North. This visit aimed to strengthen institutional partnerships and integrate national efforts in consumer protection and economic support.

The two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation and coordination to achieve greater effectiveness in enforcing laws and implementing standards.

Police Brigadier General Hatem Al-Sharif Mahmoud, Director of the General Directorate of Trade, Supply, and Consumer Protection Investigations, affirmed that standards and metrology represent the cornerstone of the consumer protection system. He emphasized their direct role in regulating markets, combating fraud and manipulation, and safeguarding public health and safety, in addition to their contribution to protecting the national economy and enhancing confidence in goods and services.

He emphasized his administration’s readiness to continue cooperation and coordination with the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO), ensuring integrated efforts, the exchange of information and expertise, and enhancing the effectiveness of field monitoring.

For her part, Rahba Saeed affirmed the strength of the partnership between the SSMO and the General Directorate of Trade and Supply Investigations and Consumer Protection, noting that consumer protection and the implementation of standards are a shared national responsibility requiring close coordination among relevant entities, especially given the current challenges facing the markets.

She explained that the SSMO is committed to supporting efforts to enforce standards and monitor goods, thereby achieving fairness and protecting consumer rights.

Both sides agreed to continue joint work, develop consumer protection mechanisms, and plan to organize a consultative meeting with relevant stakeholders. This meeting will aim to formulate and clarify the role of local authorities in consumer protection and the implementation of standards and metrology, thereby achieving greater efficiency and coordination and eliminating any overlap in responsibilities.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of the coordination undertaken by the National Consumer Affairs Committee, as it serves as a comprehensive framework that strengthens institutional integration and unifies national efforts in this vital area.
