Al-Burhan Welcomes Trump’s Initiative to Resolve GERD Issue 

Head of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, announced his welcome of US President Donald Trump’s efforts to resolve the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue.

In a tweet posted this morning (Saturday) on his X account, Burhan said he welcomes and supports President Trump’s initiative regarding the Nile waters, “with the aim of finding sustainable and satisfactory solutions that preserve the rights of all, thus contributing to the sustainability of security and stability in the region.”

On Friday, media outlets circulated a letter allegedly sent by President Trump to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, offering his mediation between Egypt and Sudan on one side and Ethiopia on the other to resolve the dispute over the GERD. Similar letters were reportedly sent to the presidents of both Sudan and Ethiopia.

Trump proposed that US mediation, with strong technical and logistical support, could lead to a lasting agreement guaranteeing regular and predictable water releases during droughts for the benefit of Egypt and Sudan, and enabling Ethiopia to generate substantial amounts of electricity, with the possibility of selling or donating a portion of it to Egypt or Sudan. Trump expressed his strong hope that the fully understood dispute over the dam would not escalate into a major military conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia, considering its resolution a top priority on his foreign policy agenda, alongside achieving lasting peace in the Middle East and Africa.
