Sudan Calls on the International Community for Concrete Steps to Protect Civilians

Sudan urged the international community to take concrete, legal, and decisive measures to protect civilians in Sudan. This appeal was made at a high-level meeting addressed by the Permanent Representative of the Sudanese Mission to the United Nations in New York, Minister Plenipotentiary Faisal Abdel-Azim Salem, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide. Salem pointed to the heinous crimes committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against unarmed civilians in Darfur, crimes which he asserted amount to genocide.

Salem called for these measures to include immediate action to ensure the cessation of military support to the RSF militia through regional and international channels, the imposition of sanctions against those who finance or incite atrocities, and enhanced international coordination to prevent weapons from reaching armed groups and militias.

The Sudanese statement referred to the National Plan for the Protection of Civilians, which the Sudanese government submitted to the Security Council, and affirmed the government’s readiness to engage constructively with international partners to ensure its implementation in accordance with national sovereignty and the UN Charter.

The statement concluded by emphasizing that the people of Darfur are not only asking for sympathy, but also for justice, and that the world must act before more lives are lost.
