Dozens Killed and Wounded in Clashes in Heglig

Dozens were killed and wounded today in clashes that erupted in the oil-rich Heglig region of Sudan between the South Sudanese Defense Forces and the RSF, according to the Sudanese newspaper Al-Sudani.

According to sources, the clashes stemmed from an attempt by the RSF to redeploy in the area and assert its control, as well as friction with the South Sudanese Defense Forces stationed around oil installations. This occurred within the framework of previous understandings regarding the security of oil fields, recently brokered by South Sudanese President Salva Kiir.

The sources confirmed that the RSF is attempting to obstruct these understandings and pressure Juba to grant it a share of the revenues from South Sudanese oil exports, in addition to trying to seize control of North Sudanese oil products in the Heglig region.
