Sudan Calls on International Partners to Support Radiotherapy for Cancer and the Agricultural Research Corporation

Sudan has called on its regional and international partners to support its efforts with the Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to restore diagnostic and radiotherapy services for cancer at centers in Wad Madani, Khartoum, and Shendi. It also called for support in establishing three new centers in peripheral states as part of the IAEA’s “Rays of Hope” initiative, in addition to supporting the Agricultural Research Corporation in its efforts to rebuild and rehabilitate its gene bank and laboratories. This will enable the country to benefit from the “Maize for Food” initiative, which focuses on promoting the use of nuclear technology and applications in agriculture and food security.

This came in a statement delivered by Ambassador Magdi Ahmed Mufaddal, Sudan’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, before the IAEA Board of Governors meeting, which began yesterday at the Agency’s headquarters in Vienna.

In the same context, the statement commended the ongoing partnership between Sudan and the IAEA and the strong cooperation with the Africa Division, calling for the provision of sufficient financial and human resources to enable the Division to fully perform its duties.

Mufaddal expressed his gratitude to the Agency’s Secretariat for dispatching a technical team to assess the situation and needs of radiotherapy centers in the country and the damage they sustained due to the rebel militia, urging the Agency to implement the rehabilitation program in accordance with the expert team’s recommendations.
