Federal Minister of Health Addresses the High Level Virtual Ministerial Meeting in High Burden Countries in the Region

The Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, stressed the state’s keenness to support maternal and child health activities through various interventions and the initiative “Every Woman and Every Newborn Everywhere” as a shared responsibility. This came during his participation of the High Level Virtual Ministerial Meeting on Accelerating Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Actions in High Burden Countries in the Region

in cooperation with UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The Minister noted that the meeting addressed accelerating actions related to maternal, newborn, and child health in countries with a high health burden in the region, with a focus on reducing child and maternal mortality rates.

The Minister reviewed the current state of maternal and child health, and participated in the discussion of national strategies to implement the resolution of the 77th World Health Assembly and accelerate progress towards achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals. Emphasis was also placed on strengthening joint advocacy activities within the World Health Day 2025 campaign. WHO, UNICEF and UNFPA confirmed coordinated support for maternal, newborn and child health in high-burden countries, while identifying opportunities to mobilize resources and build strategic partnerships to advance the health of these groups.

The Minister thanked the United Nations agencies and international and regional organizations for their interest in maternal and child health in Sudan, presenting a roadmap that includes the priorities of the health sector in the next phase with a focus on maternal and child health.
