Minnawi receives UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Sudan

Governor of Darfur and head of the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) Movement, Minni Arko Minnawi, met in Port Sudan with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra. This meeting is part of the UN’s efforts to end the crisis in Sudan and to monitor developments at all levels.

Lamamra stated that they are closely monitoring developments in Sudan, particularly the militia’s siege of El Fasher, and the efforts being made to end the crisis in coordination with influential parties, with the aim of moving forward to reach a solution that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

Lamamra affirmed that they are working to accelerate efforts to achieve a solution that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people and ends their suffering from the war. He noted that they exchanged views on the efforts made by the UN Secretary-General, his initiatives, and proposals approved by the UN Security Council regarding the protection of civilians. He expressed his hope for reaching consensus in this regard.

Lamamra affirmed that they will work hard to influence some international positions related to the situation in Sudan, noting their emphasis on Sudan’s unity and their continued efforts to achieve this based on personal convictions, in accordance with African Union and United Nations resolutions.

Lamamra added that they are working to ensure that the third year does not pass as if nothing had happened regarding the war in Sudan, and that a qualitative shift must be made on the ground to end the suffering of the Sudanese people.

For his part, Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi said that the meeting comes within the framework of the tour initiated by Lamamra during his visit to the country and the efforts made by the United Nations regarding the situation in Sudan and achieving peace.

Minnawi emphasized that the meeting focused on the humanitarian crisis facing civilians in the cities of El Fasher, Kadugli, Dilling, and Babanusa, in light of the ongoing siege imposed by the rebel militia, and the need to implement all UN Security Council resolutions on the matter.

He said that the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy affirmed the international organization’s interest and efforts to achieve peace and security in Sudan, and also affirmed his concern for Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity.
