The Federal Ministry of Health forms a higher mechanism for the health and humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region

The Federal Ministry of Health held the first meeting of the Higher Coordination Mechanism to mobilize resources and unify efforts to improve the health system in the Darfur region, which was recently formed in response to the evolving and crisis health and humanitarian situation in the Darfur region.
The meeting was attended by the heads of the offices of the United Nations agencies and international, regional and national organizations working in the field of health in Darfur, as well as the Minister of Health in the Darfur Region, the Directors General of the Ministries of Health in the five states of Darfur, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Commissioner General of Humanitarian Aid in the Darfur Region.
During the meeting, the Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim, called for strengthening health interventions in the region urgently, especially in light of the siege imposed on the city of El Fasher by the Rapid Support Militias, pointing to the importance of joint coordination to improve health services and confront the worsening humanitarian challenges.
The meeting included a detailed presentation of the health and nutrition conditions in the region, and a discussion of plans to address the cholera epidemic and malnutrition, in addition to addressing the shortage of vaccination campaigns, especially against measles.
The Undersecretary affirmed the full commitment of the Government of Sudan to support international organizations and provide all the necessary facilities and procedures for their work within the Region, stressing the need to continue the work of the Coordination Mechanism and receive reports from the concerned committees.
The meeting agreed to increase resources allocated by organizations to the Darfur region, and to facilitate the following procedures of passage and entry by official authorities, in addition to working on the rehabilitation of health institutions in Darfur to enhance the response to the current health crisis.
