Bahr al-Din: The situation of refugees in eastern Chad is painful

The governor of West Darfur state, Bahr al-Din Adam Karama, revealed the tragic situation of refugees in eastern Chad. Karama said that the situation in eastern Chad is very painful, pointing out that the numbers are large and services are limited. He added in limited press statements today that they face serious humanitarian challenges related to housing, health, education, and security. We are in constant contact with them through official deputies and community leaders, and we are working to convey their voices to humanitarian bodies and international organizations. He added that the most prominent challenges are the lack of identification documents, the lack of food and medicine, and the weakness of international support compared to the scale of the disaster.
He called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards this major humanitarian crisis, pointing out that the city of El Geneina is facing very difficult humanitarian and security conditions as a result of the war and the criminal practices carried out by the rebel militias.
The militia continues to impede the work of humanitarian organizations and impose serious restrictions on distribution, while adopting a selective policy that deprives many of those affected of their basic rights to food, medicine, and protection, he said.
Karama added that the state government has not neglected its responsibilities towards children who have been forcibly displaced to safe states, but has taken the initiative from an early date to form follow-up and coordination committees with the governments of the host states. It has also directed the civil administrations to count the displaced and determine their needs. Despite the scarcity of resources, the government has provided direct support – albeit less than ambitious – in the states of Gedaref and White Nile, and continues to appeal to supporters and humanitarian organizations to contribute to providing the necessary relief.
