Building Brighter Futures Through Better Practical Learning Spaces

In many developing countries, such as Sudan, the infrastructure supporting practical lessons—laboratories, workshops, and field-based learning environments—remains sorely inadequate. While theory-heavy instruction dominates university classrooms, students in engineering, medicine, agriculture, and natural sciences often graduate without having meaningfully engaged with the tools and environments essential to their professions.
Improving this situation does not necessarily require vast capital investments. Instead, it begins with a mindset shift: recognizing that practical education is not supplementary—it is essential. Practical labs, studio spaces, and field sites are not luxuries; they are classrooms where knowledge is tested, refined, and applied.
First, we must prioritize shared infrastructure. Instead of every university building identical facilities, regional hubs can be established—well-equipped and professionally staffed centers that serve multiple institutions. Such a model encourages resource optimization, peer learning, and stronger collaboration between institutions.
Second, we must explore low-cost, high-impact solutions. Virtual laboratories and simulations, already used in countries with limited resources, can provide students with foundational skills before they enter real-world settings. Combining digital tools with periodic hands-on exposure can reduce the pressure on overstretched facilities.
Third, partnerships with industry can be transformative. Local businesses, hospitals, farms, and tech firms often possess the infrastructure that universities lack. These partnerships allow students to engage in internships and joint projects while exposing them to real-time challenges and solutions.
Lastly, we need a national policy that recognizes the strategic value of practical education. Incentives for universities to upgrade infrastructure, train lab technicians, and embed practical components into curricula can bring meaningful change.
Without these reforms, we risk producing graduates disconnected from their professions. But with thoughtful investment, collaboration, and policy support, we can bridge the gap between theory and practice—and prepare a generation ready to build, heal, innovate, and lead.
