Forum to Discuss Ways to Rebuild the Electricity Sector in Cooperation with Microfinance

The seventh brainstorming forum, titled “Reconstruction,” was held in Port Sudan on Sunday, April 13, in cooperation between the Sudan Electricity Company and the Microfinance Unit.
In his opening remarks, the Director General of the Sudan Electricity Company, Engineer Abdullah Ahmed Mohamed Ali, emphasized the major challenges facing the electricity sector in Sudan.
He pointed to the massive damage to the sector’s infrastructure in transmission, generation, and distribution, in addition to the significant losses in materials and equipment, estimating the loss of more than 20,000 barrels of oil and huge quantities of copper from internal networks.
Engineer Abdullah emphasized the need for innovative thinking to leverage national capital, the private sector, companies, and banks to advance the sector and optimally utilize available resources. He explained that the forum aims to discuss two key points: finding new ways to implement microfinance, and how to manage and utilize limited resources efficiently to reach the largest number of beneficiaries.
The Director General expressed his optimism that the forum would yield practical ideas and solutions that would be transformed into an action plan that would contribute to finding solutions for the electricity sector and all affected sectors. He emphasized the vital role the electricity sector plays in supporting other essential services such as health, water, and communications.
The Director General concluded his remarks by expressing his pleasure at participating in this forum, expressing his aspiration to review the papers presented and participate in the fruitful discussions to come up with implementable recommendations and support them in transforming them into action plans with clear mandates to achieve the desired goals.
