Finance Minister Meets IOM Director

Minister of Finance, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim discussed with Ms. Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the most pressing humanitarian and economic issues facing Sudan at this stage, during a high-level meeting in Washington on the sidelines of the Spring Meetings.
The meeting addressed several vital issues, most notably meeting the urgent humanitarian needs of the population, ways to facilitate the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons, and the government’s ongoing efforts to achieve economic stability in light of the worsening challenges facing the country.
During the meeting, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim affirmed the government’s full commitment to supporting displaced communities and ensuring their dignified return to their citizens. He emphasized the importance of partnership with international organizations, particularly the International Organization for Migration, in implementing humanitarian and development programs. The two sides also discussed technical and logistical arrangements related to the government’s return to resume its duties from the capital, Khartoum, as a pivotal step towards strengthening national unity and administrative effectiveness.
The meeting also addressed the potential repercussions of the reduction in US aid to Sudan, with both sides expressing deep concern about the potential negative repercussions on humanitarian programs and the stability of the national economy.
The Minister called for continued international support, emphasizing that Sudan is undergoing a delicate transitional phase that requires broad international solidarity to prevent a worsening of the humanitarian situation.
For her part, Amy Pope reiterated the International Organization for Migration’s commitment to continuing close coordination with the Sudanese government and working together to address urgent needs and develop sustainable solutions for the conditions of displaced persons and conflict-affected communities.
She confirmed her intention to visit Sudan as soon as possible.
The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the importance of strengthening ongoing coordination and cooperation with international partners to ensure support for the recovery process and achieve stability and sustainable development in Sudan.
