UNSC approves statement condemning Rapid Support Forces’ seizure of UN supplies

Following extensive consultations and engagement with the Permanent Mission, the UN Security Council drafted a statement unequivocally condemning the seizure of fuel supplies by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) by the RSF on February 28, 2020, as well as the abduction of eight civilian personnel and the looting of a logistics convoy of eight vehicles and 280,000 liters of fuel following a routine fuel delivery to the Joint Border Verification Mission (JBVMM) in Kadugli. The Council expressed deep concern about threats to the safety and security of UN personnel and condemned all forms of violence against them, including abductions. The statement also called for the immediate return of the trucks and fuel and for UNISFA to carry out its mandate without hindrance.
The Security Council commended the efforts of the Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander in ensuring the successful return of all detainees to safety.
